PROJECT FOR THE ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL UPGRADING OF A RESIDENTIAL BUILDING IN MILAN

TECHNICAL FEATURES OF THE INTERVENTION

The PROJECT is based on a synergy of actions carried out according to sustainable architecture principles, which provide for the following:

  • Laying of a thermal barrier coating and a ventilated façade to improve the insulation of the enclosure, mostly using building materials of natural or recycled origin;
  • Replacement of windows with thermal-break frame types and low-emissivity glass panes;
  • Fitting of outdoor directional Venetian blinds that prevent overheating of the glass panes and shade the windows while letting light through;
  • Winter heating and summer cooling obtained by means of ceiling-mounted radiant panels;
  • A stonecrop roof garden covering the whole surface of the broad garage roofing to reduce the urban heat island effect to the benefit of the building and of the whole neighbourhood (on-site temperature: approximately 3°C below summer average);
  • Separate disposal of the residues of demolitions.

And, particularly,

  • A geothermal system set up in the garage, fitted with a small cooling tower and next generation equipment – the first case in Europe in an inhabited building.

Setting up a geothermal system in the basement of an inhabited residential building today is, in fact, a practical, non-invasive, and quick approach that ensures optimal implementation of any energy upgrading project.
